The origin of the brand dates back to 1853, when opticians Bausch and Lomb set up a research company to create sunglasses. However, the Ray Ban brand was born with the well-known aviator model designed at the base for the US Air Force in 1937. Its name is in fact the contraction of Ray-Banner (banishing the sun’s rays).
Aviator sunglasses were one of their first models and one of their most popular to date. Its popularity increased in the 1980s thanks to Michael Jackson, but the brand’s reputation weakened in the 1990s due to a decline in quality, it would seem. It was in 1999, when Luxottica acquired it, that Ray Ban made a strong comeback.
